Telephone Systems

Let me throw out two questions to you;

• How important is your telephony?

• Where would your business be without it?

These are important questions that are sometimes overlooked by business owners today.  They take the telephone for granted.  By doing so, important calls can be missed, messages not properly recorded and customers getting annoyed at busy signals.  So what is a business to do?  Most small businesses cannot afford an expensive PBX (Private Branch eXchange), and if they can, they need technical support to maintain and manage this device.  Where do you turn?  Which system is right?

Let's begin by saying that you cannot find the right system at your local department store.  And if you are trying to buy a system on-line (via the Internet) this is not a good idea either.  What about asking other business owners what phone system they use or recommend?  The answer is why doesn't everyone drive SUV's?  We have different needs and requirements.

There are too many options to select from, too many different phone systems and each system is proprietary.  Meaning, that parts from one system will not work with other systems.  Also, why spend more money that you need to?  All businesses are strapped for cash when they start, and putting too much money into equipment (or not enough) can be a poor business decision.

Let's say you want a phone system and you want to do-it-yourself.   If so, what type of system do you need?  Centrex, Hybrid, Key System, PBX, Analog, Digital or Voice Over IP (VoIP)?  Do you want voice mail and if so how much?  Who is going to install the system, program the system and repair the system when it fails? 

Keep in mind that your telephone is one of the most important business assets that you have.
